The Turangi/Tongariro region at the centre of New Zealand's North
Island has been recognised as the trout fishing capital of the world.
The region can offer excellent fly fishing all year round..
Many of the smaller streams and headwaters of tributaries are open
from 1 December to 31 May. It is also an ideal time for boat fishing on
Lake Taupo and other smaller lakes in the area well known for yielding
trophy fish.
From May to November, the tributaries to Lake Taupo traditionally
came alive with large numbers of mainly rainbow but also brown trout
migrating up the rivers. However in the last three to four years
the main spawning runs have been later, between September and late
November.
The Lodge can arrange for you a guided fly fishing experience on either the Tongariro River or (particularly in the summer months) the headwaters of the rivers and streams within the area.
